MegaWheels S1 Overview
MegaWheels are an Personal Electric Vehicles vehicles manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China. This company has produced and supplied hoverboards, e-scooters, e-skateboards and self-balancing scooters since 2014.
We were very intrigued by MegaWheels, as very few Chinese manufacturers step away from their local market, which is obviously huge. However, this company has taken conquest of the foreign market by setting up warehouses in US and EU.
Digging deeper, we found out that before MegaWheels, the company was known as JIALIKE, one of the leaders in the field of consumer electronic products since 2005. JIALIKE produced MP3 and MP4 players, portable GPS devices, cell-phones, tablet PCs and other smart products.
Today, we take a look at their first electric scooter; the MegaWheels S1. A strong candidate for one of the best budget electric scooters of 2020.
Speed, Power & Distance
How fast does it go?
The Megawheels S1 electric scooter is powered by a 250 W brushless motor at the front, with a maximum speed of up to 23 km/h (14.3 m/h). The speed is nothing too impressive, but is more than enough for a chill cruise around the neighbourhood, or travelling that last mile in a busy city.
During the tests, we had trouble reaching maximum speed stated by manufacturer. However, this is pretty much standard with the majority of electric scooters.
Although something a bit more glooming is that once half of the battery is used, top speed dropped drastically to about 15 km/h (9 m/h) and just wouldn’t go any higher. But it wouldn’t be fair to bash the power and speed too much, as it’s a budget lightweight electric scooter with a decent max. speed for the price.
What age/weight is it suitable for?
MegaWheels suggest that the S1 e-scooter is best suited for ages 10+, with a max rider weight 90 kg (198 lbs).
We asked our 85 kg (187 lbs) friend to try the scooter, and as expected performance with a heavy rider was poor. Acceleration of the S1 e-scooter was very slow, barely climbed small hills and couldn’t reach even 70% of max speed.
Heavier adults won’t have as much fun with it, but we can see this scooter being a great option for children or lighter last mile commuters. For those who require an e-scooter with more power, we recommend the Xiaomi Mi M365 smart scooter.
What is the range/distance?
Fully charged, the maximum distance the MegaWheels S1 will travel in perfect conditions is 8-12 km (5-7.5 miles). These numbers are actually pretty close to what we experienced, which is very pleasing to see. This is considering that most companies usually give an unreachable range that can be reached only in perfect road conditions, going half the max speed.
During the first run we managed to reach 9 km (5.5 miles), with some small hills on the way. On the second test, we reached 8 km (5 miles), with the throttle and speed pushed almost always to max. All things considering, with a 250W motor this range is not bad at all for a lightweight scooter.
Battery Life & Charging
How long does it take to charge?
MegaWheels S1 boasts a 5.0Ah, 29.4V Lithium-ion battery that charges from 0-100% in 3 hours. As expected, a high capacity battery in a cost effective, lightweight electric scooter is unlikely. Whilst there is nothing amazing about the battery, the charging time is still on par with most mid spec e-scooters on the market.
Battery protection & safety
There is no official information on battery safety measures. Just from the looks, it seems the battery is sealed well inside the scooter and is actually hard to tell that it is an electric scooter at first glance.
How long will the battery last for?
The manufacturer does not provide a number of cycles the battery lasts, but as with most Lithium-ion batteries their default is 500-1000 charge cycles. It’s best to base your lithium-ion batteries’ lifespan from this number. For example, if you charge your scooter every day the battery should last 1.5 to 3 years on average.
Also, keep in mind that batteries for electric transportation deteriorate throughout charge cycles done. For example, a new battery will perform much better than a battery with 500 charge cycles.
Design and Ergonomics
Considering the MegaWheels S1 is a cost effective electric scooter, it looks sleek and on par with higher end models. Its slick, smooth and thin design will cause some people to think that it is actually a regular kick-scooter.
Being a great cheap electric scooter for children, it’s nice to see that MegaWheels even includes 5 colors to pick from: white, black, red, pink, green. This color selection should satisfy any child’s desire.
On the topic of ergonomics, this e-scooter features 3 different handlebar heights, making it easy to use for any child or adult. The rubber handlebar feels quite comfortable and reduces the vibration on your hands when riding.
However, one feature missing that most e-scooters have these days is a HUD display on the handlebar. There is no way to see battery life or any other information about your ride during driving. Although battery LED lights on the side of the base of the scooter are still included.

What material is it made from?
MegaWheels S1 is made from high-grade aluminium and plastic. The main body is all aluminium, with plastic acceleration/brake pedals, and a few other cosmetic parts and plastic/rubber handlebars. Sadly, the plastic pedals and handlebars feel cheaper than most e-scooters of this specification.
Thanks to the light materials used, alongside the smaller battery allows the S1 to weigh just around 8 kg (~18 lbs) making it one of the best light electric scooters. The 5.5-inch tires are made from solid rubber and feel surprisingly soft when riding on a smooth surface. The tires are thick enough to help prevent slipping on a sharper turns.
Can it be used as a regular scooter?
Definitely. If the battery runs out of juice, feel free to use it as a regular kick-scooter without any problems.
Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?
Being a cost effective electric scooter, there is no Bluetooth connectivity for your phone. Furthermore, so far MegaWheels do not have a smartphone application for their e-scooter monitoring and controlling.
Build quality and ease of use
The aluminum body of this scooter feels extremely well built, with minimum assembly required (just screwing on the handles). As well as this, there aren’t any loose parts that wobble when riding, adding to overall ride quality.
The folding mechanism of MegaWheels S1 is nice and neat. Simply pull the lock upwards and fold the scooter in just a few seconds. We also appreciate that the scooter locks up really tight and doesn’t clatter while carrying.
MegaWheels S1 unfolded dimensions are 90 x 29 x 98 cm (35.5 x 11.5 x 38.5 inches), folded 83 x 29 x 42 cm (32.5 x 11.5 x 16.5 inches). Compact folding combined with being lightweight makes it one of the best lightweight electric scooters. Usually, a big problem for last mile commuters is folding the scooter and then transporting it to/from the next destination. We feel that for true last mile commuters, less power and shorter distance is a small disadvantage compared to the big upside of a low weighing e-scooter. This makes the MegaWheels S1 a great pick.
Whilst not being as ‘smart’ as other electric scooters on the market, MegaWheels S1 is really easy to use. Whether it will be young children or technophobic adults. Just power up the e-scooter from the side, kick start the first meter, press acceleration pedal and you’re on your way!
Safety and usability on the road
The S1 has two types of brakes, the first one being a braking pedal on the handlebar and the second being a manual foot brake. Using a combination of both brakes allowed us to stop pretty quick, in just around 4 meters during the tests. Make sure you are always careful with the electric front brake, braking suddenly will cause you to flip over if you’re not prepared.
There is no front LED light on the scooter, which makes riding at night time quite dangerous. We wouldn’t advise cruising outside in the dark without at least some kind of light to increase visibility. However, the back fender has a nice red hazard light that lights up when using the manual brake.
In general, the MegaWheels electric scooter is a really nice ride for children to use around the neighbourhood, or for adults in the city for the last mile commuting. This is partly thanks to a lower top speed, which isn’t needed for children or in situations with many people around.
However, we wouldn’t recommend the MegaWheels S1 if you live in a location with a lot of steep hills. The marketed 20-degree angle climb from our tests is more like 15-degree angle climb. Furthermore, if you are an average weighing adult then even a 15-degree angle will be a struggle for the scooter.
Is the MegaWheels S1 waterproof?
As with a number of cost effective electric scooters, MegaWheels S1 is no exception, and is not completely waterproof. S1 has a waterproof rating of IP54, meaning it is protected from splashing water from all directions and suitable for a variety of environments. Light sprinkle or puddle splashes don’t do any harm, but don’t submerge or drive in heavy rain to protect your scooter.
Does it have cruise control?
With no smart features, this e-scooter does not feature cruise control.
Maneuverability
Being no different from many other electric scooters, the S1 can’t do really sharp turns. However, thick anti-slip rubber tires offer a little bit more protection from slipping than the average budget e-scooter.
Restrictions and availability
Besides selling in China, MegaWheels have warehouses in the US. As such, the S1 is available in all states except Alaska, Hawaii islands and affiliated islands.
