RadRunner Electric Bike 2020 Review & Overview
Starting off our RadRunner 2020 review with a quick overview of the mentioned specs and features prior. First of all, the 45 mile range is exceptional and should prove more than enough for most commuters and casual rides. Alongside this, the RadRunner takes just 5-6 hours to charge, especially impressive when you consider the range offered. Most similarly performing competitors often require upwards of 8-12+ hours to fully charge. The super bright LED headlight, brake light and reflector strips ensure you stay seen and safe during darker days. The low down, step-through frame is a lifesaver for older riders and those with mobility issues. No longer must riders hoist their legs over a waist high frame whenever they mount/dismount.
Whilst the RadRunner does not fold, these types of frame designs have also become increasingly common amongst folding eBikes. However, what we found especially impressive during our RadRunner review was the capacity to hold passengers. The fully adjustable seat is large enough to comfortably accommodate an additional passenger during your ride; whilst the front of the seat adjust to best suit your height. Whilst weighing just 29 kg (65 lbs), the RadRunner supports a max. weight of up to 300 lbs (136 kg), over 4.5 times its own weight! Relatively speaking, this makes the RadRunner one of the strongest electric bikes we’ve reviewed. Discover more on this awesome ride throughout the rest of our 2020 RadRunner review.
Speed, Power & Distance
Moving on to the speed, power and distance section of our review; the RadRunner offers an ample range of up to 45 miles (72.4 km) and top speed of approx. 20 mp/h (32.2 km). Propelled by a 750W geared hub motor powered by a 48V Lithium-ion battery; we believe this an excellent performing eBike, especially when you consider the price. Many similarly spec’d competitors often up to double the price and require much longer charge times. Alongside offering such remarkable range, the RadRunner takes just 5-6 hours to charge; making it an ideal commuting eBike, as you can fully charge your ride within your daily 9-5. Of course, whilst definitely not the fastest electric bike on the market, the 20 mp/h speed is definitely more than enough for most. However, please note that variables such as rider weight, terrain, incline, weather, etc. will impact overall performance.
How fast does it go?
20 mp/h (32.2 km/h)
What age/weight is it suitable for?
Whilst there is no official statement on the recommended age, we believe this bike to best suit kids and adults aged from 12+. Whilst featuring fully height adjustable seats, the RadRunner most comfortably suits riders between the heights of 4’11” and 6’2″. However, we’ve seen a few reviews citing how comfortable it was for a 6’6″ rider, which is especially rare for competitively priced eBikes. Most of the time, there is a sacrifice between usability and performance, however RadBikes have bridged the gap perfectly. Alongside this, the RadRunner offers a max. weight of up to 300 lbs (136 kg), over 4.5 times its own weight of 65 lbs (29 kg).
What is the range/distance?
Throttle-only estimated range of 45 miles (72.4 km). Riders can switch between 4 pedal assist modes, lending a leg to get the best out of their bike. Please note, variables such as rider weight, incline, terrain, etc. will impact overall performance.
Battery Life & Charging
Powered by a 48V, 14 Ah (672 Wh) Lithium-ion Samsung battery, the RadRunner boasts some seriously high quality materials. It’s no surprise that riders will reach ranges of over 40 miles when packing this bad boy battery. What’s more, this premium quality battery also ensures a rapid charge time of just 5-6 hours; especially impressive when such a range is offered. In most cases, similarly performing eBikes often require in excess of 8-12+ hours to fully charge. Whilst long charge times are no problem for casual riders, commuters require something that charges within their time frame.
The combination of fast charging and the remarkable range offered makes the RadRunner an ideal commuting eBike. RadBikes take great pride in the materials used; citing that “we know that a high-capacity battery like this isn’t something you cheap out on”. Further attesting to the exceptional quality and high standards held throughout the production of this excellent eBike; rest assured, this bike and its battery are of top quality.
How long does it take to charge?
5-6 hours, making the RadRunner a pretty fast charging eBike.
Battery protection & safety
Unspecified. Whilst we were unable to find any official statement on battery protection, overvoltage/overheating protection, etc; we do know that the connectors and wiring harness’s are water resistant. Alongside this, RadBikes have been in the business for over 10 years. As such, we believe it more than likely that they’ve considered and implemented various safety systems. However, we recommend contacting them for yourself to best confirm this.
How long will the battery last for?
An average quality Lithium-ion battery offers approx. 500-1000 charge cycles before any faults arise. This premium quality Samsung battery is rated for 800+ charge cycles. For some perspective, even if you were to charge your eBike daily, it would still take over 2 years to reach this stage.
Design and Ergonomics
Moving on to the design and ergonomics section of our 2020 RadRunner review. As mentioned in our overview, the low down, walk-through frame results in extremely easy mounting and dismounting; especially beneficial for older riders and those with mobility issues. RadBikes have clearly spent a long time thinking through the design of this exceptional eBike. Offering a huge number of accessories to best benefit riders, ranging from racks, platforms, passenger seat, fenders and more; the RadRunner actually offers a total of 330 accessory combinations. As such, many of the RadRunner bikes, including yours, are utterly unique. Furthermore, the dual leg kickstand offers greater balance when parked; a simple yet innovative idea which greatly improves functionality.
As previously mentioned, the additional passenger seat is the real game changer; a feature we very rarely see on electric bikes of all prices. We feel this feature is seriously overlooked by competitors, as many riders like to ride with some company. The grippy rubber hand grips result in easy steering and control, whilst retaining comfort throughout longer journeys. Alongside this, Tektro Aries (MD-M300) brake calipers and Tektro 180 mm front & rear brake rotors ensure sharp and precise stopping power. With a frame fashioned from aluminium alloy, the RadRunner is both lightweight and strong; supporting over 4.5 times its own weight. All in all, this is one solidly built eBike packed full of features and comfortable to ride; well worth it for such a competitive price.
What material is it made from?
Aluminium alloy frame/brake levers, rubber tires/handle grips, rigid steel front fork.
Can it be used as a regular bike?
Yes – Riders have the ability to switch between 4 pedal-assist modes. Those putting in the extra effort are rewarded with extended range and a possible increase in top speed for rapid pedallers.
Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?
No – Unfortunately, we were unable to find evidence of any mobile app or Bluetooth support for this commuting eBike.
Build quality and ease of use
Moving our RadRunner 2020 review to build quality and ease of use; in which the Runner claims superiority in both. As previously mentioned, the super durable yet lightweight aluminium alloy frame results in a strong electric bike capable of supporting over 4.5 times its own weight. Alongside this, the premium quality, Lithium-ion Samsung battery is of exceptional quality and will run for years. RadBikes truly are innovators, releasing fresh designs packed full of often overlooked features; such as the moped-style seat capable of comfortably accommodating a passenger. As such, it’s no surprise that the RadRunner claims the title of Best Electric MiniBike of 2020, alongside being named the Best Electirc Bikes in 7 categories by ElectricBikeReview. If this doesn’t attest to the exceptional build quality and design of the Runner, what will?
In terms of ease of use, this exceptional eBike is extremely easy to mount, dismount and ride overall. The previously mentioned walk-through frame is a godsend for older riders with mobility issues. The intuitive LED display is perfectly situated and easy to operate, showing battery level, pedal assist mode and light indicator. The awesome amount of accessories offered result in a bespoke ride for all; with an accessory available to perfectly suit all your requirements. RadBikes have really impressed us this time, delivering a delightful design with fantastic functionality, all at an incredibly competitive price.
Safety and usability on the road
Moving on to arguably one of the most important sections of our RadRunner 2020 review; safety and usability on the road. As every rider knows, their safety is paramount when riding on the road. Staying seen and safe is especially important when riding at night. Thankfully, the RadRunner further features both rear lights, LED headlights and reflector strips, aiding in keeping you safe during darker days. Furthermore, the integrated bell is incredibly useful for alerting pedestrians, traffic and other riders of your presence. However, we recommend riders always wear adequate safety gear, such as a helmet and high-visibility jacket.
The dual Tektro 180 mm front & rear brake rotors result in some seriously sharp and effective braking, allowing riders to stop on a whim. This is especially important when riding on the road, as you never know when you’ll need to make a sudden stop in a potentially life saving situation. Lastly, the puncture-resistant tires are especially useful for roadside use. Fashioned from a layer of aramid and ceramic particles inside the tire, these tires are designed to offer extra protection against glass, thorns and other risks. Perfect for extended roadside riding, ride worry and puncture free, wherever you go.
Is the RadRunner waterproof?
Whilst we were unable to find any official statement surrounding waterproofing, we do know that the RadRunner features water resistant connectors and wiring harness. Alongside this, many similar eBikes of this capacity feature a number of waterproofing features. As such, we believe it likely that RadBikes have implemented this. However, we recommend contacting them for a definitive answer. Learn about IP ratings here.
