To begin, this model boasts a 300W motor with a max. output of 700W; contributing to a 15.5 mp/h top speed, pretty fair for the price. This motor also possesses a decent amount of torque, contributing to its hill climbing ability of up to 10 degrees.
Typically, budget urban eScooters offer minimal hill-climb capacity and often a lower top speed. However, one thing we feel was painfully average about the ES2 is the 15.5 mile range offered. Whilst this is still a pretty good range, many similarly priced competitors offer the same performance.
Of course, this is still acceptable as it performs at an average level, however isn’t setting standards any time soon. However, the main focus of this model are the features it has to offer, such as a battery management system, lighting, riding modes, etc. The inclusion of these features gives it an edge over other similarly priced competitors, whilst also greatly improving rider experience.

Bringing our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES2 review onto battery life & charging. Boasting a 187 Wh Li-ion battery contributing to the decent 15.5 mile range; one of the most efficient battery types. These lithium-ion batteries perform much better than their counterparts, often charging faster, lasting longer and less prone to faults.
However, Segway have still decided to integrate a Battery Management System (BMS); protecting against common faults such as under-voltage, under-current, overheating, etc. in turn extending battery life. We were especially pleased with the fairly speedy 3.5 hour charge time from empty, making this a top electric scooter for commuters, as they can easily charge from empty during a shift.
The battery remains fully integrated within the frame, protecting against external force & offering an IP54 water resistance rating. Whilst the Ninebot ES3 and ES4 feature dual external/internal batteries, they also cost quite a bit more. To keep riders covered from any faults not their own, this scooter also comes with 1 year warranty; should any issues arise during this time.

As previously mentioned, this model utilises a battery management system. This system protects against common electrical faults such as: over-voltage, over-current, over-charge, short circuiting, etc. & contributing to a longer battery lifespan. Alongside this, the battery is fully integrated within the frame, protecting it against external damage and elements.

With a design brings delight to many a rider, we believe Segway actually pioneered a few industry standards with these models. For starters, the curved anti-slip deck & solid rubber front tire have become a standard addition on many models in recent years. In fact, this model (alongside the rest of their “ES” range) won the 2018 Design Award; further attesting to the innovation and convenience offered by Segway. Integrated front & rear lighting is an important feature that we’ll touch on in our safety & roadside section. As expected, the ES2 features a fully folding frame, allowing riders to quickly & easily carry, store or transport their ride wherever they go.
This, combined with a fast charge time, low cost and light weight makes it a great electric scooter for commuters. Front & rear shock absorption soak up otherwise harsh hits, resulting in a smooth ride and no compromise in rider control. With a weight of just 12.5 kg (27.5 lbs), this model supports weights of up to 100 kg (220 lbs); dead on 8 times its own weight. Segway have opted for a solid rubber tires on most of their ES models; offering greater durability at the cost of shock absorption afforded by air filled tires.

For starters, the overall build quality of this model is brilliant, boasting an robust yet lightweight aluminium frame. It can withstand a number of hits, bumps and slams without warping or bending out of shape.
Although weighing just 12.5 kg, this model supports up to 100 kg, 8 times its own weight! The battery utilises lithium-ion cells, one of the best battery types available on the market. A battery management system protects against common electrical faults and helps to extend battery life.
Alongside this, the IP54 water resistance rating means this model protects against dust ingress and moderate sustained water pressure. For such a fair price, we feel that the specs & features offered are more than worth it; however were especially surprised to see minimal compromise in quality.
In fact, to attest to their own confidence in quality control, Segway offer 1 year warranty on all official purchases, keeping riders covered should any faults arise.
Ease of use
In terms of ease of use, learning and riding this model is a walk in the park. Choose from 3 speed settings to help you get to grips with your ride or simply match your mood. The solid front rubber wheel offers less shock absorption than an air-filled alternative, however is much more durable and rarely requires replacing.
The display is centrally situated, allowing for fast & effortless checking of speed, distance, battery life, etc. The stem features a small hook for hanging up bags or other baggage, also another plus for both ease of use and commuters everywhere. In this day and age, modern eScooters must strict fire & electrical safety standards before production, with this model being no different. As such, its likely that this model is completely UL2272 certified, alongside IP54 water resistant.
Safety remains paramount when riding on the road, especially with other traffic or at night. Thankfully, this model makes use of both front & rear LED lighting, alongside reflective side strips to help riders both see & stay seen. Utilising both electric & mechanical braking, riders should have no issue making sharp stops on demand; although the exact type of brake used remains undisclosed.
In terms of roadside suitability, Segway themselves state that this model best suits flat pavement & asphalt. Due to an overwhelming lack of off-road functionality, we see it as no surprise. However, the ES2 does feature front & rear shock absorption, affording riders some protection against potholes and other bumps in the road; protecting against any compromise in rider control.
Although, we still recommend avoiding these particularly savage potholes, as they often cause accidents.
