9/10 (Expert Score)
Product is rated as #17 in category Electric Scooters
Introducing the Varla Eagle One, one of the top entry-level electric performance scooters and a key competitor of the Apollo Ghost. Boasting a huge 52V 18.2aH lithium-ion battery grants this monster model a range of up to 40+ miles; one of the longest range eScooters we've reviewed. Unsurprisingly, this eScooter claims a speed to match, with a top speed of approx. 40 mp/h. The dual spring suspension ensures a suitably smooth ride, maintaining rider control when going over potholes and speed bumps. Choose from single/dual motor modes and 3 gears with varying power. In 3rd gear & dual motor, we actually felt wheelspin when accelerating from a stationary position. Although unofficial, we're convinced this scooter reaches 0-20 mp/h in under 3 seconds. However without spoiling too much here, feel free to learn more about this epic eScooter below, in our complete Varla Eagle One review for 2024.

Varla Ealge OReview & Overview

Varla Eagle One Overview

Welcome to our Varla Eagle One review for 2024. Although this brand is fairly new to the game & only offer one model, it truly is a monster. This superpowered scooter that ticks all the boxes as one of the best entry-level high performance models. At ~$1600, it’s clear that this eScooter is for the serious rider and dedicated enthusiast; the same price as its main similarly performing competitor, the Apollo Ghost. Although suitable for long distance commuting, such powerful motors and a big battery require a large & robust yet cumbersome frame.

As such, we recommend any riders who must carry their ride upstairs to look for something a little lighter or smaller. However once this model gets moving, it reveals a surprisingly agile turning circle and showcases some brilliant balance. We were able to coast at around 2-3 km/h without any wobbling or balance issues commonly found in other designs. So without revealing too much here, lets begin the bulk of our Varla Eagle One review for 2024; starting with speed, power & distance.

Speed, Power & Distance

Speed, Power & Distance

With dual 1000W motors and a max. output of up to 3200W, it’s no surprise that the Eagle One excels in this section. That maximum output affords this model some astounding acceleration power, enough to start wheel spinning at full throttle from stationary. In fact, this eScooter even picks up speed faster than most conventional mopeds, capable of hitting 30 km/h in seconds. Riders have the choice between 3 gears, each offering varying levels of speed and power. Alongside this, they can also switch from single motor to dual motor mode, essentially doubling your power; although it feels like much more than double.

However, riders can also extend their battery life and mileage in Eco mode, allowing for mileages of up to 40 miles. This is coupled with an official speed limit of 40 mp/h, which we actually managed to go over. Although, please note that variables such as rider weight, incline, terrain, etc will impact overall performance. The hill-climbing capacity on this model is also outstanding, shredding through inclines of over 30 degrees with minimal loss of speed. Due to this raw power, we insist riders wear adequate protection when riding this model. In fact so do Varla, including a full set of knee, elbow and wrist pads inside the box.

How fast does it go?

Officially rated as 40 mp/h, although we pushed it faster than that (not recommended); faster than its Apollo Ghost counterpart. Acceleration via trigger throttle, located near the LCD display and brake levers. Riders will get the most power in gear 3, dual motor mode. Easily hits 25 mp/h on grass.

What age/weight is it suitable for?

Although Varla disclose no official recommended age for the Eagle One, it’s clear that such a high power scooter model is made with only adults over 18+ in mind. In terms of suitable weight, this monstrous model supports weights of up to 330 lbs (150 kg), however Varla officially recommend a maximum of 265 lbs (120 kg). As previously mentioned, rider weight can impact overall performance.

What is the range/distance?

In first gear & single motor mode, we were able to push the Eagle One to a range of up to 40 miles off a single charge. That’s just a mile more than the Apollo Ghost, making it great for long distance riding & commutes; especially when coupled with cruise control, allowing riders to relax a little. However as previously mentioned, the bulky frame and heavy 77 lbs weight can make carrying & transporting this model difficult.

Battery Life & Charging

Battery Life & Charging

Moving our 2024 Varla Eagle One review onto battery life & charging. Boasting a big 52V 18.2 aH Li-ion battery, covered  by warranty for up to 2 years. Although this battery is the same size as the Ghost, Varla have somehow managed to squeeze in an extra mile over Apollo. Lithium-ion batteries have fast become the industry standard, offering a longer lifespan, bigger capacity and faster charging than traditional counterparts.

Considering its role as a high-performance long range eScooter, we were fairly surprised at the Eagle One’s decent charge time; requiring just 8-9 hours (single charger). That’s a direct improvement over the Ghost, which requires up to 12 hours with the standard charger. Many other similarly performing electric scooter models also require 12+ hour charge times, clearly a solid win for the Eagle One. With the inclusion of two charging ports, riders can utilise dual charging for a greatly reduced time of 4-5 hours.

Varla Eagle One Charging Ports

How long does it take to charge?

Single charger: 8-9 hours

Dual charger: 4-5 hours

Battery protection & safety

Integrated within the deck, protecting against bumps, crashes and other external forces. Offers greater protection to the battery, however means that riders must charge directly from the deck. We feel that a removable battery would really give this model an advantage over even better performing competitors. Almost all components of the Eagle One eScooter are IP54 water resistant, protecting against moderate sustained water pressure and dust ingress from all angles.

How long will the battery last for?

An average quality Lithium-ion battery typically lasts for approx. 600-1000+ charge cycles before any faults arise. For some context, this would take approx. 2-3+ years of daily charging to reach. Alongside this, Varla offer 2 years warranty on the battery, keeping riders covered should any issues occur in this time.

Design & Ergonomics

Design and Ergonomics

Time to delve into the design & ergonomics section of our Varla Eagle One review for 2024. As previously mentioned, such a big battery and powerful dual motors require a fairly large frame to house these components. This results in a highly durable yet cumbersome scooter difficult to transport manually. It took two people to carry up a set of stairs, simply because of its weight and unwieldy size.

fastest electric scooter review 2024

As such, this model remains unsuitable for short distance commuters seeking manoeuvrability and prioritising portability. However, this is a high-performance scooter and clearly appeals to thrill-seekers and die-hard enthusiasts. Such a frame also results in great durability, withstanding harsh hits without buckling, bending or warping. The integrated dual spring suspension is superb, resulting in a smooth ride that eats up small potholes, speedbumps and other roadside obstacles with ease; all whilst ensuring an excellent level of rider control.

Whilst the frame is fully folding and offers some extra convenience, there is no integrated handle for easier transportation. Due to the bulky frame and heavy design, this model remains unsuitable for commuters relying on high mobility/portability. The large, grippy 10″ pneumatic street tires offer great grip on a number of terrains. In fact, we found that the Eagle One easily reaches speeds of up to 25 mp/h on grass with these standard tires; with Varla further stocking optional off-road tires. The deck mat offers great grip and every order contains 4 differently designed deck mats to choose from.

Although the designs aren’t to everyone’s taste, giving riders a choice is always nice…

Varla Eagle One accessories & spares

Yes – Varla offer a range of spare parts and accessories for the Eagle One. Easily source replacement chargers, deck hooks, fenders, LCD displays, handlebar bags and more; all at a fair price from the official supplier. Riders can even purchase an official seat for the Varla eScooter, which installs fairly easily. Check out the full range of Eagle One accessories here.

What material is it made from?

Aluminium alloy, lithium-ion cells, pneumatic rubber tires, LCD backlight display

Can it be used as a regular scooter?

Not recommended – although definitely suitable for traditional use when unlocked, it’s so heavy that riders will have trouble picking up any speed. Alongside this, riders run the risk of injury. During testing of this section, I managed to sprain my ankle going a mere 9 km/h, simply by clipping the kickstand with my foot when pushing off the ground downhill. Whilst definitely a user error, we still recommend riders take extra care not to injure themselves on these heavier scooters.

Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?

No – unfortunately we were unable to find any evidence of Bluetooth connectivity or mobile app support.

Build quality and ease of use

Bringing our 2024 Varla Eagle One review onto build quality & ease of use. We feel that this model definitely met our expectations, offering a great build quality, stemming from a robust aluminium alloy frame. To attest to its strength, this eScooter is capable of supporting weights of up to 330 lbs (150 kg), easily one of the highest load bearing scooters on the market. It’s clear that Varla have made no compromise on quality, utilising lithium-ion battery cells and ensuring IP54 waterproofing on the majority of components; protecting against sustained water splashes and dust ingress.

Although requiring a small amount of screw tightening when fresh out of the box, no components rattle provided this is done correctly. We had a slight issue with the key ignition, in which we accidentally pushed the screw we were tightening into the component, which was fairly difficult to get out. The LCD display is clear, concise and showcases speed, gear mode, mileage and battery life. However, this is a generic controller and was not made in house; instead sourcing the same component as their main competitor, the Apollo Ghost. Although previously mentioned, the dual spring suspension is simply superb, resulting in a remarkably smooth ride and flexibility.

Regarding ease of use…

In terms of ease of use, getting to grips with the Varla Eagle One may be a little difficult for some to begin with. It’s big and heavy at 77 lbs, requiring some degree of strength to move around when stationary. However once moving, riders will have no issues controlling this ride. It’s brilliantly balanced, capable of crawling at speeds of ~2-3 km/h without tipping over or listing. Cruise control is an excellent feature, allowing long distance riders to relax a little. Regenerative braking is another integral inclusion, converting kinetic braking energy into battery power and extending mileage.

The handlebars are solid and comfortable, giving riders great grip even with wet or sweaty hands. Everything is conveniently situated, allowing for an easy & straightforward riding experience. Feel free to use the USB port to charge your device on the move; great for mapping routes however comes at the cost of increased battery usage. The key ignition is a great addition, increasing security and offering some anti-theft protection. An integrated kickstand results in quick & easy parking wherever you are.

Those familiar with Apollo scooters will have no issue familiarising themselves with the controller. This model utilises a “QS-S4” generic display sourced from the same external supplier as Apollo. Although a little daunting at first, riders will quickly get the hang of it. Simply turn on and push the mode & power buttons at the same time to change settings, or just hold mode to turn on the lights. We have an in-depth tutorial on how to use this controller coming soon.

All in all, a very straightforward and comfortable ride once moving, with seat installation further available for even greater comfort. It even comes with an integrated bell, however it’s fairly flimsy and wouldn’t hurt to upgrade. Continue reading for arguably the most important section of our 2024 Varla Eagle One review; safety & usability on the road.

Safety & Usability on the road

Safety and usability on the road

Switching our review of the Varla Eagle One to safety & usability on the road. For almost every rider, personal safety remains paramount when on roads or simply on the move. With such potent power lying in reserve, riders will have no problems keeping up with most traffic in urban areas. Seeing as this high-performance eScooter offers some serious top speeds, we insist riders always wear adequate safety gear when using this model.

Varla include knee, elbow and wrist pads with every purchase, so please wear them alongside a helmet. Please keep both feet on the deck at all times until stationary, even at low speeds injuries can still occur. When testing functionality as a regular push scooter, I barely clipped the kickstand going 9 km/h downhill but instantly sprained my ankle; so take extra care on these heavier models!

Stay seen during both night & day

For street & night time use, integrated front & rear lighting allow for riders to both see and stay seen. Rear brake lights let traffic know when riders are slowing down, with front lighting located in the deck. Simply hold the “mode” button on the controller to turn on the headlights. This is obviously an important inclusion, although we feel that left/right indicators would also go a long way.

When moving, the Varla Eagle One handles well and is brilliantly balanced; coupled with dual spring suspension to ensure a smooth ride. This results in riders able to tackle a number of potholes and speed bumps with minimal loss of control. However much like most heavier models, the Eagle One is a little difficult to manoeuvre when stationary; although it retains balance brilliantly even at speeds as low as 2 km/h.

Varla Eagle one vs apollo ghost

Brilliant braking & on/off-road functionality

The dual hydraulic disc brakes are remarkably responsive, resulting in sharp & sudden stops on demand; an important requirement when riding with traffic. The Eagle One further features an anti-lock braking system (ABS), helping riders steer in emergencies by restoring traction to tires.

On the topic of traction, this model massacres most terrains & remains mostly suitable for both off & on-road use; capable of easily hitting speeds of 25 mp/h on grass with just standard street wheels. Varla also offer additional off-road wheels for the Eagle One, should you require them. As such, this model remains perfectly suitable for both off & on-road use (depending on laws of local region).

Is the Varla Eagle One waterproof?

Yes – the Varla Eagle One claims an IP54 water resistance rating, resulting in protection against dust ingress & sustained water blasts of moderate pressure from any direction. Most electrical components are integrated within the deck, with any external cabling being well protected. However, Varla recommend avoid riding in rain for sustained periods of time. Learn more about IP ratings here.

Does it have cruise control?

Yes – riders can enable cruise control via the buttons situated on the LCD display. Hold down the mode & power buttons, navigate to “P17” and set cruise control to 1.

Manoeuvrability

Moving our 2024 Varla Eagle One review onto manoeuvrability before our closing with our coupon sections. Going from stationary or attempting to transport this model by hand is difficult. The frame is big, heavy and cumbersome, taking two people to carry up the stairs. Many may think that 77 lbs (34.9 kg) isn’t a lot… it all adds up when rotating such a monster model through a door or confined spaces such as a car boot.

Certainly not ideal for those who live or must charge their ride upstairs without assistance. Moreover, this model suits those without stairs and a decent amount of living space. However in terms of riding manoeuvrability, the Varla Eagle One is surprisingly nimble, agile and easy to turn for its size and weight.

Restrictions and availability

From what we’ve seen, Varla appear to ship the Eagle One to all major countries and continents, offering both domestic and international shipping. Those who purchase from the official Varla website will enjoy up to 2 years warranty, keeping them covered should any faults arise in this time.

We recommend riders double check their local laws and regulations for their region to ensure that these transport methods remain legal. Some countries prohibit models over certain motor sizes.
