What models are going to be compared in this review?

In this overview we are going to review three different Atom electric longboard models:

Speed, Power & Distance

Atom longboards we are reviewing today are actually very powerful considering their price.

• H10 – 700Watt Hub Drive brushless dc motor
• H16D – 700Watt Dual Hub Drive brushless dc motors (1400Watt total)
• B10X – 1000Watt Belt Drive brushless dc motor

When we have a lot of power we also have great acceleration, braking, and speed, that’s where these electric longboards shine. However, we can’t have everything for a low price, and in this case, the setback is distance. A lot of power uses battery life quick and results in short distance traveled. Adding to that, we were disappointed with very low climb gradient on all three longboards, even tho they all have quite powerful hub motors (H10 – 10%, H16D – 15%, B10X – 12%).

How fast do they go?

• H10 maximum speed up to 25 km/h (16 m/h)
• H16D maximum speed up to 32 km/h (20 m/h)
• B10X maximum speed up to 24 km/h (15 m/h)

As you can see there is quite a reasonable gap in speed between H16D model and the other two. The H16D model is more expensive than H10 and B10X but should be more appealing to speed lovers who have the desire to always push the pedal to the metal!

Does it have more than one speed setting?

Yes, all three models have a Slow/Eco mode and Fast mode. The maximum speed on both modes is the same, the only difference in Slow/Eco mode is that the acceleration and hill climb is much weaker. This is great for beginners who are just getting into electric skateboarding, but we would love to have another speed mode with limited speed mode for safer commuting in traffic.

What age/weight is it suitable for?

Atom Longboards have two rider weights in their specifications. One is Max Rider Weight the other is Max Recommended Rider Weight. We guess that if the rider exceeds the recommended weight the performance stats like speed and distance start to drop noticeably, which happens with almost all electric vehicles. This is a nice gesture from the company and shows it is being honest by suggesting a recommended weight instead of just pointing out a max weight.

• H10 – Max rider weight 100 kg (220 lb), Max recommended rider weight 91 kg (200 lbs)
• H16D – Max rider weight 150 kg (330 lb), Max recommended rider weight 125 kg (275 lbs)
• B10X – Max rider weight 125 kg (275 lb), Max recommended rider weight 91 kg (200 lbs)

H16D electric longboard has huge max rider weight and should be very appealing to heavy riders. It might be one of the best electric skateboards for heavy riders on the market.

We did not find any information on age restrictions for Atom electric longboards. If you are not sure if your children can use them please contact Atom customer support.

What is the range/distance?

As we have already mentioned above, huge power and speed usually take a toll on the distance:

• H10 – max distance 13 km (8 miles)
• H16D – max distance 20 km (12.4 miles)
• B10X – max distance 11 km (7 miles)

Important to note that the B10X all-terrain model distance is so low because it has bigger wheels designed for off-roading, which take more power to drive and result in the lower distance.

All three models have regenerative braking which allows getting some of that battery energy back when braking or going downhill.

Can it be used offroad?

The H10 and H16D models are not designed for off-roading. They have street wheels made for pavement, streets, and sidewalks. The B10X model has much bigger wheels with a rugged surface to better grip dirt and small rocks. It is important to note B10X electric longboards versatility advantage. This model can be used off-road and also in urban settings when you have bad roads, rocky pavements, and cracked sidewalks.

Battery Life & Charging

All Atom Longboard electric longboards have high quality 18650 Lithium-Ion batteries that are either made by Panasonic or Samsung.

• H16D – 36V 4.4ah 158Wh Samsung battery pack with USB charging port
• B10X – 36V 2.5ah 90Wh Samsung battery pack

How long does it take to charge?

The electric longboards will charge 0-100%: H10 – 3 hours, H16D – 2 hours, B10X – 2.5 hours.

Battery protection & safety

There is no information about battery protection and safety by Atom Longboards.

How long will the battery last for?

Usually, Lithium-Ion batteries have a lifespan of around 500-1000 charge cycles meaning you can charge and discharge your battery around 500-1000 times before seeing a drop in battery performance. Atom Longboards in their manual state that after around 500 charge cycles your battery will lose about 20% of its capacity.

So, as an example, if you charge your battery every day it should last for 1-2 years if you charge it less often then 2-3 years or even more, before starting to drastically drop in performance. However, these numbers are not exact since battery life depends on many factors and cannot be accurately foreseen.

Design and Ergonomics

Being designed by skaters Atom longboards are actually really comfortable and look like regular longboards since the hub motors aren’t really visible and battery packs are slim and under the deck or inside the deck of H16D.

Having a wide wheelbase on all three models allows for a wide stance and a really stable ride especially when going on maximum speeds.

As all longboards, these Atom models are not very portable because of their size:

• H10 – 91.5 x 25.5 cm (36 x 10 inch)
• H16D – 93 x 24 cm (36.6 9.4 inch)
• B10X – 91 x 25.5 cm (35.8 x 10 inch)

What material are they made from?

The H10 and B10X decks are made from maple and bamboo composite material and the H16D model deck is carbon fiber.

The bamboo/maple decks are really flexible and any experienced longboarder knows how much more comfortable it is to carve and cruise with a flexible board.

The H16D carbon fiber deck is stiff, which allows the longboard to be very stable when going on high speed.

Being made from light materials and having quite small batteries allows Atom longboards to be light compared to other high-performance electric skateboards. H10 weighs 4.7 kg (10 lbs), H16D 6 kg (13 lbs), B10X  6.3 kg (14 lbs) and are one of the lightest electric skateboards you can get.

Remote

To be honest we weren’t really thrilled about the remotes on any of the models. H10 and H16D have same, quite ergonomic remotes while B10X has a little bit different not really good looking remote.

All remotes are very simple. H10 and H16D remotes have speed mode buttons, power button, and acceleration/braking lever. B10X remote has additional lights to indicate battery power.

Really simple remotes with just the most important functions you need. The B10X remote can be charged with USB charger while the H10 and H16D model remotes need AAA batteries.

Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?

Currently, no electric longboards from Atom have smartphone applications.

Build quality and ease of use

All three longboards are built very well and have a good quality longboard feel. Bamboo boards feel very comfortable and flexible, while the carbon fiber board feels amazing on high speeds.

All three Atom Longboard models in this overview are great electric skateboards for people who have never ridden an electric skateboard and experience longboarders as well because these boards feel just like regular longboards.

Not only that they feel as regular longboards when you step on, but you can also actually ride the H10 and H16D models as regular longboards if you run out of battery juice or want to exercise. Since the two models have hub drive motors there will be no resistance from the wheels when kick pushing. However, the B10X model has a belt drive motor and will be much harder to ride without battery power.

Safety and usability on the road

We really like the brakes on the Atom electric longboards. They don’t kick in too fast but are strong enough to give a quick stop without throwing you off the board.

As with most electric skateboards, Atom models do not have any lights for dark time riding, so we would advise adding custom lights and reflective stickers if you decide to ride at night. Moreover, don’t forget a helmet and protective padding for safety.

Are Atom electric longboards waterproof?

These electric longboards are not waterproof. They are water resistant but will not protect from rain or water streams, so it is advised not to ride in wet conditions.

Maneuverability

Overall, longboards are not too maneuverable unless you can slide. If you want to make fast turns or sudden changes in direction longboards might not be right for you.

Bamboo deck models H10 and B10X are a little bit more maneuverable compared to the H16D carbon fiber model because of their flexible decks, but the H16D will provide more stability on fast speed.
