Glion Dolly Overview
The Glion Dolly is a lightweight, foldable Electric Scooter produced by the Glion scooter company. Glion only makes two, high-quality scooter models, the Dolly, and the SnapnGo, the latter is actually a modern mobility scooter. With their tagline ‘End Boring Commutes‘ the Dolly is aimed towards adults wanting a greener, more fun way to commute to work, college or around town.
Glion Dolly electric scooters are one of many high-quality electric scooters that have hit the market in 2020, and they’re becoming an increasingly popular way to get around town.
The Glion Dolly has a couple of special features that separate the scooter from other electric scooters on the market. The Dolly has foldable handlebars and a retractable handle on the bottom of the scooter so when you fold the scooter you can roll it behind you almost like a suitcase:
This means when stopped, you have the ability to stand the scooter horizontally and have your hands free.
Speed, Power & Distance
How fast does it go?
The Glion Dolly has one speed setting which reaches a maximum of 24 km/h (15 m/h) speed. It’s not the fastest electric scooter on the market, but it’s certainly faster (and way more fun!) than walking.
What age/weight is it suitable for?
Glion Dolly maximum recommended rider weight is 115 kg (255 lbs). However, some Glion Dolly reviews report that for maximum speed and power, in reality, it’s more suitable for people weighing up to 100 kg (220 lbs). Within this weight, riders should have no trouble reaching and maintaining max speed on flat surfaces.
What is the range/distance?
With perfect conditions, full charge and a lower than maximum speed or weight capacity you should be able to reach a distance of 25 km (15 miles) until your battery runs out. It is known from experience that the distance stated by manufacturers is the max you can squeeze with best conditions so it is always good to hope for less.
Of course, going uphill the speed reduces slightly but it should not be too noticeable as long as the hill is not too steep, even with close to max rider weight. This is thanks to a 250W brushless electric hub motor with a peak performance of 600W!
Battery Life & Charging
This lightweight urban electric scooter is equipped with relatively small SONY Lithium-Ion 36V, 6,6 ah battery. The battery should allow you to ride for around 3-3.5 hours with a full charge.
Although this is not on a single charge, Glion claims that you should be able to travel 500 miles on $1 of electricity.
How long does it take to charge?
One of the benefits of a smaller Lithium-Ion battery is that it charges really quickly. A full charge should only take around 3.5 hours and 0-75% just 2 hours.
How long will the battery last for?
This SONY battery is composed of 30 NMC 18650 cells that should last you at least 1000 charge and discharge cycles. Even for frequent commuters that lasts for 3-5 years of riding. Glion scooter company also offer a replacement battery, which is reasonably priced, so if your battery dies outside of warranty you can replace it instead of buying another scooter.
Design and Ergonomics
The Glion Dolly electric scooter is one of the most practical lightweight electric scooters on the market in 2020. It is designed for the urban commuter population who need short rides between public transportation, college campus, or local destinations which are just a little too far to walk.
Is it foldable?
The Dolly has an easy to fold mechanism which is another great design feature. You need to unclip the handlebars, use your foot on a latch to fold the mainframe and then lock it on the scooter base. It is easy and quick. Glion company call it one-second fold, but in reality, we feel like it is closer to 3 seconds – which is still pretty quick! When folded, the scooter measures 92x20x30 cm (36x16x8 inches).
One of the most unique features on Glion Dolly is the trolley handle that comes out of the scooter bottom when the scooter is folded which allows it to roll behind you like luggage. Additionally, you can stand it horizontally while on public transportation or while waiting in the queue so you have both of your hands free. These features are patent pendind, so it’s unlikely you’ll find them on other electric scooters!
What material is it made from?
The Glion Dolly body is made from aircraft grade aluminum which provides a sturdy and reliable build. This also means that the scooter is more resistant to corrosion than scooters made of some other materials, due to a powder coat on the aluminum body.
Is the handlebar comfortable?
The scooter is called Glion Dolly Adult scooter and has two adjustable handlebar heights, and its also foldable which makes it even more compact.
Does it connect to your smartphone?
Unlike some other high-end electric scooters, there is no smartphone app or Bluetooth connectivity that tracks your data. This is really the main point which lets the Dolly down as it’s a high selling point with other electric scooters in the same price bracket.
Does it have suspension?
The Dolly doesn’t have suspension, but it does boast 8-inch honeycomb airless tires. This means you don’t have to fill them up or worry about flat tyres. It’s kind of a replacement for suspension so that you can still ride on rockier, less even surfaces.
Safety and usability on the road
There seem to be no big reasons to be concerned about the safety of Glion Dolly Adult electric scooter. When driving at night time you have a front light and a rear reflector. The front light is not too bright but it does the job.
What kind of brakes does the Glion Dolly have?
The scooter has electric brakes. Usually, we prefer electric scooters with mechanical disc brakes as they are reported to be more reliable as they don’t require electricity. From other user reviews, we were informed that when the battery starts running out the scooter acceleration stops before the brake does, so you don’t need to worry that you’ll be unable to brake. Also, it is worth noting that if your battery goes to zero you can still use it as a kick scooter.
Is the Glion Dolly waterproof?
We tried to find out if the scooters controls and battery are waterproof but the only thing producers say on their website is that all controls are water resistant. With producers not giving more information on waterproof grade we would advise to take care and not use the scooter in heavy rain or driving through puddles. Better safe than sorry.
Is there cruise control?
The Glion Dolly does not have cruise control, which is a feature which does let it down against other electric scooters in the same price bracket.
Maneuverability
The Glion Dolly has a 90-degree turning wheel which allows smooth maneuverability when riding on the road, and when carrying, the easy folding mechanism will allow you to carry this scooter through urban areas where riding isn’t an option.
Restrictions and availability
The Dolly electric scooter is available to purchase and be delivered to most of the world. Its delivery should be faster as well since it is a US based company and they also have dealers in the UK, Singapore, and a couple other destinations in Asia.
Having maximum speed of up to 25 km/h (15 mph) this electric scooter should be street legal and require no registration in the USA. However, we strongly advise anybody buying an electric transport vehicle to check their local laws, it is your own responsibility.
In the UK this scooter falls under the category of Personal Light Electric Vehicle so you don’t need to pay tax or register it, but you cannot legally drive on public roads and pavements.
In Europe, some countries are stricter and some don’t have laws for electric scooters yet at all, so again, make sure to check your local laws.
One thing to remember is that as long as you drive safe, without creating situations that cause accidents you should not be noticed or bothered with this silent electric scooter.
Value for money
So, is the Glion Dolly worth the money? The build and mechanical design is good, but the Dolly lacks features like Bluetooth, smartphone app and an average design. The Glion Dolly does have a couple of special features like the pull out trolley handle and ability to stand it up horizontally but for the price, we would probably recommend taking a look at the Xiaomi Mi electric scooter.
