In this 2023 Gotrax G4 review, we aim to cover a number of stats, specifications & features included with this magnificient model. Take a look at the key specifications below, and read on for our in-depth review .Part of the “all new” G-Series from Gotrax; a selection of new, high performance eScooters with bigger motors, more features and greater distances.
This upgraded model boasts a bigger battery, greater efficiency, a new design, features and much more. With such a cost-effective price, this model also makes a great electric scooter for commuters; especially considering the decent performance offered. In comparison to the GXL V2 & XR Elite, this model maintains a clear advantage over its predecessors, in both speed, power & distance.
Not long ago, our team reviewed the Gotrax Glider; an eScooter aimed towards younger riders, typically kids and teenagers. After which, we reviewed the GXL V2, which surprised us with its persistent performance throughout; offering great utility at a cost-effective price. Gotrax have wasted no time in delivering another delightful model, this time taking form in the G4. So without further delay, lets begin our Gotrax G4 eScooter review for 2023, starting with speed, power & distance.

How fast does it go?
This model maintains a top speed of approx. 20 mp/h (32 km/h). However, please note that variables such as terrain, incline, weather, rider weight, etc. will impact overall performance.
What age/weight is it suitable for?
With no reference to recommended age, Gotrax do state in the product listing that this eScooter is for adults; described as an “electric scooter for adults”. Whilst we see no problem with 16+ year olds riding this model, any younger may require supervision. In terms of suitable weights, the G4 supports up to 220 lbs (100 kg) whilst weighing just 36 lbs (16 kg); just over 6 times its own weight.
What is the range/distance?
This eScooter offers a range of approx. 25 miles (40.2 km) off a single charge; with total mileage and battery life indicated clearly on the handlebar display. We were fairly impressed with this range offered, especially for such a budget eScooter. Typically, models of this price range offer lacklustre performance, which counters value for money. However, the Gotrax G4 doesn’t seem to have this issue, instead offering potent power at a fraction of the price.
Can it be used offroad?
Whilst (like most models) some degree of off-road functionality is possible, this eScooter certainly wasn’t designed for off-road use. The inclusion of air-filled road tires showcase this, alongside a lack of off-road features. Whilst a short spin on some grass is fine, we don’t recommend taking it through the woods.
Does it lose power uphill?
The Gotrax G4 eScooter can tackle inclines of up to 15 degrees before sacrificing any power. Whilst speed slows slightly when going uphill, this model solidly soldiers through. Of course, variables such as terrain, rider weight, etc. impacts overall performance.

Bringing our 2023 Gotrax G4 review onto battery life & charging. Starting off, this model features a beefy 36V 10.4aH Li-ion battery; offering greater capacity, safety & a speedy charge time. Whilst no mention is made, its more than likely this model incorporates some form of a battery management system. These systems protect against common faults such as over/under voltage, over/under charge, etc. This highly efficient battery likely attributes itself to the decent top speed and range offered by this variant. We were seriously surprised with the features and performance offered for such a cost-effective price. This budget electric scooter definitely earns a spot as a top pick for commuters.
How long does it take to charge?
Charges in just 4-5 hours.
How long will the battery last for?
Lithium-ion batteries typically last between 500-1000 charge cycles before any issues arise. As such, riders should expect somewhere between 600-800 charge cycles, which would still take approx. 2-3+ years of daily charging to reach. From the looks of it, Gotrax also sell replacement batteries, alongside offer 90 day warranty for any faults in this time.

Dealing with the design of modern eScooters can prove tricky for some manufacturers. However, Gotrax have stuck to the tried, tested & true folding eScooter frame. This greatly increases portability, allowing riders to quickly and easily, transport & store their ride. This high level of portability adds another positive when using this eScooter for commuting. A number of ease of use features have also undergone integration; including cruise control & digital locking.
Cruise control greatly increases comfort for long journeys, with digital locking allowing you to safely park/store your ride & protecting against theft. Regenerative braking is another awesome feature not often seen in eScooters of this price range. These brakes essentially convert kinetic braking energy into battery power, increasing ride time & helping you push for that extra mile. We were truly blown away by the quality of materials used & its design, all for such an efficient price!

What brakes does the Gotrax G4 have?
This model manifests dual disc brakes, guaranteeing some great stopping power & control. Alongside this, the G4 also incorporates regenerative braking, converting kinetic braking energy into battery power. Riders will have no issues making sharp & sudden stops on demand, however we recommend braking slowly on wet terrain.
Is it foldable?
Yes – much like many of their models, this time claiming a new folding mechanism, designed for storage in seconds. The Gotrax G4 folds by pulling the tiller towards the back wheel and folding mainframe to the rear fender and hooking it into the rear fender buckle for easy transport or storage.
Is the handlebar comfortable?
The handles are very comfortable with well placed acceleration and brake buttons on different sides for easy use. It also has an LED screen to monitor speed and battery charge.
Does it connect to your smartphone?
No – unfortunately this model does not feature Bluetooth / mobile-app support.
Does it have suspension?
Unspecified. We believe that the lack of suspension is due to its intended purpose at a roadside eScooter.
Does it work as a regular scooter?
Those wishing to use their Gotrax G4 as a basic kick scooter will easily do so, just turn off the power first!
Build quality and ease of use
In terms of build quality, we believe the Gotrax G4 meets all our expectations. For starters, the frame is fairly solid & will not bend or warp easily when taking hits. The battery is fully integrated within the deck, which has both positives and negatives. For starters, this integrated battery is better protected against the elements & any harsh hits; although riders must charge the entire eScooter from the deck, instead of just the battery.
However, with such a rapid charge time of 4-5 hours, this shouldn’t prove an issue for most. Really, many similarly priced competitors don’t even offer half of what this model does. To further attest to their confidence in build quality, Gotrax offer a 90-day warranty on all official purchases; keeping you protecting against any faults out of your control. We truly couldn’t recommend a better eScooter for the price; however if you see one, let us know in the comments!
How easy is it to carry?
With a fully folding frame and weighing just 36 lbs (16 kg), riders should have no issue packing, transporting, storing or carrying their eScooter.
How smooth is the ride?
Provided you stick to recommended surfaces and roadsides, the 10″ pneumatic tires should prove more than enough shock absorption. Whilst riding on the road, we had no issues with uneven or wobbly riding. However, as this model slacks on suspension, we recommend avoiding big bumps and potholes like the plague. Alongside this, we also advise riders to avoid going off-road or traversing tricky terrain, as the suspension (or lack of) can’t handle it.

Switching to the most important section of our 2023 Gotrax G4 review; safety & usability on the road. As we all know, staying safe and seen when riding on busy roads is especially important at night. Thankfully, this model features a fairly bright LED headlight, coupled with a reflective rear strip. This should aid riders in both maintaining sight & staying seen themselves. However, we still heavily recommend riders wear adequate safety gear; ranging from a high-visibility jacket, gloves, helmet, etc.
Dual braking is a great feature, allowing riders to choose from brake levers, rear foot brake, etc. These dual brakes offer sharp stopping power, allowing riders to make sudden stops at a moments notice. Although, we recommend braking gently when riding on wet terrain, as sharp braking could also compromise control. The lack of suspension doesn’t prove much of an issue, provided you stick to the road. However, big potholes can cause some shocks and potentially compromise rider control. As such, we only recommend riding smooth roads that you know well.
Is the Gotrax G4 waterproof?
Yes – the G4 claims an IP54 waterproof rating, protecting against moderate water pressure & dust ingress. Learn more about IP ratings here.
Does the Gotrax G4 have lights?
Yes – this model features a front LED headlight & rear reflector strip. Whilst a rear brake light would be nice, we believe the reflector strip should prove more than enough for most.
