Welcome to the beginning of our 2024 Hiboy S2R review, the latest addition to their “S2” model range. This entire range seems to focus on delivering high quality yet affordable electric scooters to the masses; with Hiboy repeatedly releasing variants with vastly differing specifications and price tags. From what we can gather, the S2R is the second best performing variant, just behind the S2 Pro eScooter.
We were most pleasantly surprised with how full of features this model really is; offering mobile app support, customisable speeds, cruise control, regenerative braking, triple lighting and much more. Honestly, its relatively rare to find such a competitively priced eScooter offering such a slew of features with no compromise in performance. How fast does it go?
Powered by a 350W motor, the Hiboy S2R offers a top speed of approx. 19 mp/h. Furthermore, riders can easily customise their top speed via the control panel or mobile app. However, please note that variables such as rider weight, incline, terrain, etc. will impact overall performance.
What age/weight is it suitable for?
Whilst no official statement remains available regarding recommended age, we believe this model clearly best suits teenagers and adult riders. In terms of weight, the Hiboy S2R supports weights of up to 200 lbs (90 kg); all whilst weighing just 30.8 lbs (13.99 kg) itself.
What is the range/distance?
Powered by the 36V 7.5 Ah Li-ion battery, the Hiboy S2R offers a max. range of around 17 miles (27.3 km). Those undergoing long journeys will also enjoy utilising the cruise control feature, giving your hand a rest from pressing on the throttle. Lastly much like speed, please note that rider weight, incline & other variables can impact performance.
Can it be used offroad?
Due to its nature as a city/street scooter, we recommend sticking to even surfaces such as roads and pavement. Whilst riders can still tackle short grass and dry mud, this comes at a compromise in control & performance. As such, we believe this model is very much a roadside eScooter.
Does it lose power uphill?
We were nicely surprised with the uphill power offered from this model, which was more than capable of tackling inclines of up to 15 degrees. As such, we recommend this as a great electric scooter for commuters and casual riders alike, as not many riders find themselves needing to tackle any steeper hills. This figure was reached testing on a rider of average weight (~60-70 kg), please note that heavier riders may experience reduced climbing capacity.

How long does it take to charge?
The Hiboy S2R requires a fairly respectable 4-6 hours to charge from empty. For a model of this price range, we were fairly happy with this performance; especially considering similarly priced competitors often requiring in excess of 8+ hours. As a fully removeable battery, riders can enjoy straightforward and convenient charging, no longer needing to charge from the frame. As a result, riders can charge from pretty much anywhere.
How long will the battery last for?
As previously mentioned, the removable battery is a 36V 7.5 Ah Li-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries offer some of the best performance available, proven far more effective and longer lasting than counterparts. As a result, riders should expect somewhere between 500-1000+ charge cycles before any issues arise. For some perspective, this would take approx. 2-3+ years to reach this point, with Hiboy offering a 1 year warranty on all purchases.

Design and Ergonomics
Delivering our 2024 Hiboy S2R review onto design and ergonomics. Honestly, for such a competitively priced eScooter, we sure were surprised at the premium features and design choice incorporated. Regenerative braking is a great addition often reserved for higher-spec models. This system converts kinetic braking energy into battery power, helping you push for that extra mile. Much like many of their models, the frame is fully folding; allowing for fast, compact and convenient packing or transportation of your ride. This is always a huge plus for those also taking public transport, making it a great electric scooter for commuters.
Speaking of, cruise control is another great feature, perfect for giving your wrist a rest on long journeys. With a fully removable battery, riders can easily charge from almost anywhere with a power socket; whereas previously they would have to charge from the entire scooter frame. This greatly improves convenience and portability, utilising a feature often reserved for high-spec models. Mobile app support is also another great inclusion, allowing for locking, diagnostics, speed settings and more; all in the Hiboy mobile app, available on both Apple and Android (linked below). Most importantly, the triple lighting system maintains rider visibility whilst keeping them seen and safe, discussed in detail under our safety & usability section.

What brakes does the Hiboy S2R have?
This model utilises dual braking in the form of disc braking & eABS regenerative anti-lock braking. Whilst we believe drum brakes best, such a low price tag likely won’t allow it.
Is it foldable?
Yes, the frame of this model is fully folding, allowing for quick, easy & compact transport or storage in a matter of seconds. Coupled with a light weight of 30.8 lbs (13.9 kg), riders should have no issues folding, transporting or storing their scooter, wherever they go.
Does it connect to your smartphone?

Build quality and ease of use
Moving our Hiboy S2R review onto build quality & ease of use. Truthfully, we have been pleasantly surprised by this scooter, every step of the way. Although boasting such a competitive price tag, Hiboy have spared no expense on quality control; utilising a number of premium quality materials. From the Lithium-ion battery cells to the aluminium alloy frame, its clear they hold the upmost confidence in their build quality; going as far as to offer 1 year warranty on all official purchases. This particular model claims an IP54 water resistance rating; protecting against dust ingress and moderate sustained water blasts. Seeing these ratings is always a good sign, as many similarly priced competitors either don’t offer any protection or stay silent.
Whilst light weight at just 30.8 lbs, this strong scooter supports up to 200 lbs (90 kg); just over 6.4 times its own weight. 8.5″ solid rubber tires eliminate the risk of punctures, allowing riders to relax a little when on the road. In terms of ease of use, this eScooter is incredibly easy to learn, operating much like every other model. The deck is spacious, offering ample room to stand and move around on. A centrally situated display showcases speed, battery life and more, all at a brief glance. Riders can set their own top speed and riding modes, allowing to better craft a bespoke riding experience for each individual. Honestly, we were very happy with the overall build quality & features offered, especially for such a competitive cost.
How easy is it to carry?
Very easy – With a fully folding frame and light weight of just 30.8 lbs (13.9 kg), riders will have no issues storing, carrying or transporting their ride; making it a great eScooter for commuters.
How smooth is the ride?
Provided riders stay on smooth & even surfaces as recommended, no problems will arise. However, due to a lack of suspension, riders must still look out for potholes and other bumps in the road.
Safety
Safety and usability on the road
Switching to the most important section of our 2024 Hiboy S2R review; safety & usability on the road. Thankfully, this model incorporates triple lighting, alongside “ultra-bright” headlights; helping riders both see & stay seen on dark days. However, like always we insist riders wear adequate safety gear when riding on the road. This includes high-visibility clothing, a helmet, gloves, etc. With a programmable top speed, riders can customise and abide by various speed limits depending on region.
A fairly responsive dual braking system ensures significant stopping power, allowing riders to make sudden stops on demand. One thing worth noting is the seeming lack of suspension, resulting in rides often spent avoiding potholes at all costs. However, this model still offers a smooth and comfortable ride on flat & even surfaces. Judging from the lack of off-road functionality, its clear that this model is intended strictly for roadside use.
