Welcome to our Segway ES1 review for 2023. As we’ve already reviewed the ES2, ES3 and ES4, we’ll try to keep this one brief. To begin, this model claims the Design Award of 2018, following suit with the rest of the range. It’s average range of 15.5 miles and top speed of 12.4 mp/h are actually fairly decent considering the price. It’s clear that this model was intended for roadside use within urban & inner-city environments. As such, its adapted to suit the city whilst offering a decent level of performance for a low cost; giving us an impression of a pretty good electric scooter for commuters. How fast does it go?
Powered by a 500W motor, this scooter reaches a top speed of 12.4 mph (20 km/h). Riders further have 3 speed modes to choose from; speed limit, standard & sport.
What age/weight is it suitable for?
Segway officially recommend this model for those aged 14+, weighing 55-220 lbs (25-100 kg) and between 3′ 11″-6′ 6″ (120-200 cm) in height. However, please note that heavier riders will likely encounter reduced performance.
What is the range/distance?
Riders should expect an average range of approx. 15.5 miles per charge. However, please note that variables such as rider weight, terrain, incline, etc. will impact overall performance.

How long does it take to charge?
Approx. 3.5 hours, the same amount of time as the ES2. The battery is fully integrated into the frame, with riders charging their scooter directly from the deck.
Battery protection & safety
Like the rest of this range, the Segway Ninebot ES1 features a Smart Battery Management System (SBMS); protecting against common faults such as over-voltage, over-current, etc. This SMBS monitors battery status whilst offering charge/discharge protection to help extend battery life & user safety. The battery itself is integrated within the deck, which claims an IP54 water resistance rating. How long will the battery last for?
The Ninebot ES1 utilises lithium-ion cells for its battery, one of the most efficient and long-lasting types available. Typically, an average quality Li-ion battery lasts between 400-800+ charge cycles before any problems arise. Even charging daily, this stage would still take 2-3+ years to reach. Moving our 2023 Segway Ninebot ES1 review onto design & ergonomics. As previously mentioned, every model of this range claims the iF Design Award 2018; likely due to its trendsetting deck & centrally situated display. In fact, we notice many trends and features copied by competitors over the years, with Segway essentially setting the standard for conventional scooter design.
Despite being a budget electric scooter, the ES1 is still packed full of features often reserved for more expensive models. For starters, it features integrated LED headlights, front shock absorption, IP54 water resistance, solid rubber tires and even a mobile app.

Continuing our design analysis, the ES1 is also very lightweight, weighing in at just 25 lbs (11.3 kg), with a fully folding frame for easy transport or storage; another reason why its a top budget electric scooter for commuters.
Ergonomically speaking, the Ninebot ES1 is comfortable to use and ride, with an anti-slip deck mat resulting in great grip even with wet shoes. Yes – much like the majority of their models, riders can lend a leg should they feel the need to.
Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?
Yes – riders can easily customise and diagnose their ride from the Segway mobile app, available on both iOS and Android. This is one of the few budget electric scooters under <$600 to offer this feature.
Build quality and ease of use
Bringing our Segway Ninebot ES1 review onto build quality & ease of use. For such a low-cost eScooter, we were convinced that overall build quality would be below average. However, we were pleasantly surprised, with this model capable of supporting up to 100 kg (220 lbs); on par with many mid-budget and above models.
To attest to its build quality, Segway offer a 1 year warranty on all official purchases, covering riders should anything occur during this time. Whilst weighing only 25 lbs (11.3 kg) and supporting 220 lbs (200 kg), this model can handle just over 8.8 times its own weight. It’s clear that the overall build quality is brilliant, especially for such a low-cost eScooter.
Overall, design & build quality is very similar to the ES2, whereas the ES3 & ES4 decide to differentiate and go their own way. In terms of ease of use, the ES1 is simple to learn, with riders able to choose from 3 speed modes to suit their style. The deck is spacious & comfortable, utilising anti-slip material to keep your feet on the deck.
The tires are solid rubber, resulting in puncture-proof, stress-free riding. Whilst solid rubber tires offer less shock absorption than air-filled pneumatic, they result in unrivalled durability. All in all, this is one solid scooter for the price, incorporating host of features and design choices that make riding a breeze.

Switching to one of the most important sections of our Segway Ninebot ES1 review for 2023; safety & usability on the road. Starting off with the solid rubber tires, which offer great durability and a longer lifespan than air-filled counterparts. They’re also completely puncture proof, allowing riders to power through glass and other sharp objects, however we still recommend avoiding these when you can.
Front shock absorption soaks up some of the shock when battling potholes, preventing against loss of rider control. Although again, riders should attempt to stick to flat & even surfaces as intended. It’s clear that this model was designed for roadside use in mind, boasting an inner-city/urban design with minimal off-road functionality.
IP54 waterproofing & a BMS result in greater safety & security, whilst also allowing riders to tackle the elements. Whilst you can withstand a few light showers, we don’t recommend riding through torrential rain or submerging your ride.
The stopping power of this model is surprisingly effective, with the double braking system (mechanical/electrical brake) offering a stopping distance of 13″ from 12.4 mp/h. The front headlight allows riders to both see & stay seen no matter the hour. However, we insist that riders wear adequate safety gear such as high-visibility clothing, helmet, gloves, etc.
