Ninebot Segway miniPRO Overview

We’re excited to introduce, and detail a Segway miniPRO, a twist on your classic segway mode of transportation. But considered to be in the hoverboard category and noted to be a luxurious one to say the least. Most Segway’s cost thousands of dollars plus, but the Segway Ninebot miniPRO is an affordable alternative. It’s lighter, budget-friendly (Segway speaking that is) and safe.

When you first step on the Ninebot miniPRO, you’re going to feel like you’re on a full-size Segway. It’s still considerably powerful and a well-structured unit. One of our favorite qualities of this board is the insane amount of stabilization. It’s going to stay upright even if you attempt to push it over and this board really excels when you get it off the pavement. Coming equipped with an easy-to-use control shaft reaching knee height, and an app for iOS or Android to control or just check out your stats, the Segway Ninebot miniPRO is of great value and quality.

Speed and power & Distance

How fast does it go? What is the range/distance?

The miniPRO Segway is built like a tank featuring two 800 watt powered motors, cruising up to 10 miles an hour which is actually wicked fast and 14 miles of driving range before needing a charge.

What age/weight is it suitable for?

It’s rated for a minimum of 80lbs to 220lbs. Because the control shaft can only be adjusted to a certain extent, riders as small as 3’ 11” and up to 6’ 6” can hop on the Segway miniPRO. Heads up! It stands 5 or 6” off the ground already so if you are quite tall it may be a tad bit difficult to enter through doorways, elevators or other low clearance entries.

Can it be used offroad?

Off roading is surely attainable as the heavily built tires and sturdy deck allow you to get off the pavement and cruise over grass, uneven dirt, gravel or whatever (small) obstacles. As long as it’s not over an inch of a drop the small suspension will allow you to smoothly cruise over without notice.

Battery life

The range is somewhat impressive; Segway Ninebot miniPRO is anticipated to achieve 14 miles per charge, which is factual if you’re running it on horizontal surfaces, though it is capable of climbing steep hills (up to a 15 degree angle) however it will exhaust the battery a lot quicker. Also to keep the batteries top notch, make sure the PSI on the tires is at the recommended level for the most battery time.

Battery protection & safety

Segway Ninebot miniPRO is certified under the UL2272 which is the safety certificate specifically aimed for hover boards/self balancing scooters. Design and Ergonomics

Checking out how this unit is built; its stand on two 10.5” pneumatic chunky tires, and weighs approximately 28lbs. It’s recommended to be at least 80lbs to ride for complete control and maximizes at 220lbs. A pneumatic, or air-filled tire, is defined as a tire made of an airtight inner core filled with pressurized air. A tread, usually reinforced with steel belting or other materials, covers this inner core and provides the contact area with the road.

It’s also better built than most hoverboards, featured with the chunky tires and a substantial-feeling platform to stand on automatically balancing when turning on.

The control shaft, located in the center of the board at calves’ height is adjustable allowing those of different heights to ride the Segway Ninebot miniPRO. For comfort and anti-slipping there are two rubber mats for your feet, providing some shock absorption and grip. Also located between your feet there is the power button with an adjoining screen for displaying battery life. Below that is a plastic lid that which you can flip up to charge. Charging takes up to 4 hours depending on remaining battery life.

Looking at the Segway miniPRO remote control feature, it’s moderately easy going, though similar to the Segway Ninebot miniPRO itself, it might take a little bit of practice at first. The stability is controlled effectively as a dot inside of circle. Drag it up to drive forward, left to turn left and on.

SideNote: the speed seems reduced when controlling it remotely.

What material is it made from?

The Segway Ninebot miniPRO casing is made of a tough magnesium fusion and is covered with a consumption safe material to refrain from rusting.

Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?

This Segway miniPRO comes with its own iOS and Android apps which come in handy for a multitude of functions. Once you pair via Bluetooth the app will display the metrics such as; current range, speed, battery temperature and distance since last charged etc. You can even control your speed through the application, and the LED lights can also be changed through the app. You can even find nearby friends with Ninebot miniPRO and create competitions. Fun stuff!

In terms of functional applications, at first glance, we also really like the anti-theft lock feature. The purpose is to alert your phone if someone tries to move or pick up your miniPRO. Unfortunately, this feature is only enabled when your Segway Ninebot miniPRO is turned on. This seems very flawed, and lets down the other great features in this Segway miniPRO review. The safety feature is virtually useless as you need to have the unit turned on and connected via Bluetooth for it to be active!

There are other functional features in the Ninebot miniPRO app. You can download the latest firmware to keep your miniPRO up to date. We also love that you can run diagnostics to check the health of your Segway Ninebot miniPRO. Hopefully, this helps some riders know when there’s a problem that needs fixing before it gets more serious.

Does it have lights?

The Segway miniPRO has two white LED lights on the front of the unit as well as two colored LED lights on the back for safety. The backlight color can be changed through the app, and the lights can be seen from around 15 feet away. Acting as a signal light; the backlights will flash in whichever direction you are turning or when you stop as well.

Does it come in different colors?

Black or white are available.

Build quality and ease of use

Is it easy to ride?

It may seem intimidating at first, but you should feel more comfortable after a little practice. Training mode activated for your safety for the first 0.6 miles / 1km. After that, you should feel much more comfortable. With time you’ll start to relax making longer rides more viable. Like most things, the more you practice, the better you’ll get. For the first few miles of riding the Segway Ninebot miniPRO expect your feet and calves to hurt, or until you acclimatise. The steering mechanism stands between your calves and with effortless leaning or rocking you can move forward slowly or fast for whatever speed needed with this padded knee control. Once you’re in tune with it, this should feel as natural as walking.

Ultimately, riding the Segway just requires that you bend your knees, lean with your hips and look into the turns. Although that might sound a bit like a testing proposition at first and diverse from most boards, it’s also what makes it enjoyable and pleasurable to ride. Especially as you become more confident and ride with less hesitation.
