Gotrax Hoverfly XL Overview
The team behind Gotrax have quickly established themselves as one of the market leaders in personal electric transport. They’re renowned quality and high specification for both electric scooters like the Gotrax GXL and their hoverboard range have made their products some of the most popular in 2020.
The Gotrax XL is the second hoverboard/self-balancing scooter that we have reviewed so far. The XL is one of 3 hoverboards produced by Gotrax, and as the XL name suggests, its the bigger more functional hoverboard model in Gotrax line of products. The higher price is still affordable, and we think is warranted, given the extensive features which come with the model. It’s powerful, fast, has a high weight capacity and is even suitable for offroading.

Speed and power & Distance
How fast does it go?
We put this question first for a reason. The first question buyers usually want to know is the Gotrax XL top speed. The XL goes 7.4 MPH or 11.9KM. It’s joint first with the Gotrax ECO as the quickest in the Gotrax range of hoverboards, and although it might not sound that fast when you’re actually riding the XL, we thought it felt much quicker.
What age/weight is it suitable for?
Unlike its younger sibling, the Gotrax ION, The Gotrax XL is designed for heavier riders with a max weight of 220LB or 99KG, so it should be suitable for kids, teenagers and a regular adult.
What is the range/distance?
The distance on the XL is listed as approximately 9-10 miles or 14-16 km. This is fairly impressive given its small size and higher max weight.
Can it be used offroad?
The Gotrax XL comes with hard rubber all-terrain tires which are suitable for offroading. Its got a tough looking exterior, with bumpers and anti-slip grips and looks ready to take on both the streets and offroad trails.
However, a word of warning is needed here, the Gotrax XL is not waterproof or even water resistant, so their claims that it’s a proper offroad electric vehicle are sort of misleading. You will not be able to claim your warranty if your Gotrax XL is water damaged whilst offroading. Whilst its still one of the best hoverboards for offroading, we just want to make sure you exercise caution and only use it in dry conditions.
Battery life
How long does it take to charge?
With a completely flat battery, the Gotrax XL should be fully charged in around 2-3 hours. This is, again, impressive compared to the Gotrax ION as the XL has a longer battery life and shorter charging time.
Battery protection & safety
All Gotrax hoverboards are compliant with the industry UL 2272 safety standards. These standards are designed to prevent: overcharging, under-voltage and over-heating. You should always check that your hoverboard is built to these standards, regardless of your choice.
How long will the battery last for?
We were unable to find any information on how many cycles the Gotrax XL specifically lasts for, however, generally speaking, batteries of this kind should last 500 – 1000 charge cycles, or 2-4 years depending on usage.
Design and Ergonomics
Does it connect to your smartphone via app or Bluetooth?
The Gotrax Hoverfly XL connects to your phone via Bluetooth and has a loud Bluetooth speaker so that you can play your favorite tunes whilst you ride.
There is also a Gotrax Hoverfly App for iOS and Android which, at the time of writing appears to be in BETA. The app reportedly allows you to view battery usage, temperature, speed and more. As mentioned, the App is in BETA and the reviews leave a lot to be desired, so hopefully, the reliability of the App will be improved in later releases.
Does it have lights?
The Gotrax XL has LED lights front and rear which light the ground beneath you. These lights are also made from UL Certified materials. This gives the Gotrax XL a really modern, futuristic look when riding.

As expected, Gotrax offer a huge number of spare parts and accessories for the Hoverfly XL, including a huge number of their other models. These spare parts/accessories are the perfect way to enhance your repair your Hoverfly XL; fixing faults or improving performance.

Wheel size & material
As the name suggests, the inflatable hard rubber tires on the Gotrax XL are extra large. They’re actually the biggest in the Gotrax range at 8.5″.
Does it come in different colors?
The Gotrax Hoverfly XL comes in 7 different colors: black, blue, galaxy, green, pink, purple and red. We think each of the colors looks great, and there should be something there for everyone’s style and preference!
Build quality and ease of use
Is it easy to ride?
Another popular question when looking for a hoverboard is ‘how easy is it to ride?’. And to a lot of peoples surprise, it’s actually quite an easy thing to get the hang of.
The Gotrax Hoverfly XL has self balancing technology which, as the name suggests, self balances so that you can get on the board when its stationary.
If you’re a first time rider, you can use the training mode with reduced speed so you can get the hang of the basics. There are also two other speed modes, standard mode, and pro mode so that you can gradually increase the speed when riding safely.
Once you’re on the hoverboard, the advanced Gotrax gyroscopic technology allows you to navigate forward, backward and turn by simply tilting your bodyweight and adjusting your foot placement. Although it looks very difficult to do in videos, it’s actually very intuitive when you start using it.
Safety and usability on the road
Similarly to the other Gotrax hoverboards, the Gotrax Hoverfly XL comes with rubber non-slip foot grips and bumpers. Some reviewers said that it didn’t perform well in wet conditions, but since it’s not waterproof, you probably shouldn’t be using the XL in these conditions anyway – more on this below.
Is the Gotrax Hoverfly XL waterproof?
Gotrax state that none of their hoverboards are even water resistant, let alone waterproof, and as mentioned earlier in the Gotrax XL review, hoverboards damaged with liquid are not entitled to any kind of warranty. More info on the warranty disclaimer here.
In short, the Gotrax Hoverfly XL should only be used in dry conditions.
Gotrax Hoverfly XL Christmas, Boxing Day & Prime Day Deals
Unfortunately, we were unable to locate any price charts for the Hoverfly XL. As such, speculating any future Christmas, Boxing Day or Prime Day deals is rather tricky. However, Gotrax are known to often offer deals on a variety of products throughout the year; as such, we believe Christmas & Boxing Day very likely to include a few discounts here and there. However, we don’t think that Prime Day will feature significant deals, if any, on the Hoverfly XL. Furthermore, we couldn’t actually locate any product listing on Amazon for this hoverboard.
That’s not to say that possible Prime Day deals are completely off the table for the Hoverfly XL, though. For now, we recommend focusing on our coupons, deals and promo code section.
